For the 2009 competition, schools that participate in the Competition Division will have their FTE population calculated using standardized data submitted to the federal Department of Education's IPEDS program. This is the number by which reported weights will be divided to determine per capita recycling weights. For more information about the FTE calculations, refer to the IPEDS section of the Rules page.
Data reported will come from Some Weights / Some Estimates.
We will be collecting data for bottles and cans, paper, cardboard, food service organics, trash, and commingled. For bottles and cans, we will use weights taken by our recycling collection company, who picks up and weighs our 30-yard container once per week. We sort all the glass out and we will be weighing the glass in 90-gallon roll carts weekly. Containers that are serviced directly by our hauler will be weighed right before pickup; some of this material is commingled rather than source-separated. For mixed paper, we will weigh each filled Gaylord (large cardboard box) and mark it with the weight and date. We fill these on an ongoing basis and they are picked up every 3 to 3.5 weeks. By marking the weight and date on each one, we will know which week to report the data. Shredded paper from our confidential program is weighed on a daily basis for our records. For cardboard, we collect daily and place material into 6-yard containers. We will make a visual estimate of how many 6-yard containers we fill each day and use the volume to weight conversion factor provided on the Recyclemania website. For food service organics, pre- and post-consumer material is collected from our three major dining halls, one coffee shop, and at our Student Sustainability Center. We will weigh containers at the dining centers and coffee shop right before pickup (once per week). The Student Sustainability Center will keep a scale next to their bin and weigh materials before materials is dumped in. For trash, our waste hauler picks up trash every weekday and will use the truck scale to record and report weights to us at the end of each week. We have a few satellite campuses and experiment stations and many extension offices. We will gather weights from the largest two satellite campuses (Cascades Campus and Hatfield Marine Science Center) weekly. This material will be commingled, not source-separated.
